How to Hold the Gate Open Using a Premium Metal Wireless Keypad

Overview

The latch open feature should ONLY be used with systems utilizing the automatic close timer to close the gate.
In this article you will learn how to hold the gate open using an access code on a Premium Metal Wireless Keypad. This process involves adding a new access code into the keypad, pairing the new code to the radio receiver, and then setting the radio receiver to hold the gate open. This code can also be called a 'hold open' or 'latch' code. Once set up, entering the latch code will open the gate and bypass the automatic close timer, keeping the gate open. Entering the latch code a second time will release the hold open and allow the automatic close timer to return to it's normal close count down. An example of this set up process will be provided at the end of the article.

Applies To Part Number(s)

  1. 050551

What You Need

  1. A Phillips head screw driver to remove the keypad
    1. A second person can be used in place of removing the keypad
  2. A long and narrow tool (toothpick, paperclip, etc.)

Procedure

The following three steps are required to complete the hold open configuration.

1. Program a Hold Open Access Code

The new code needs to be programmed using a different channel from the regular access code. Follow the instructions in the article linked below, making sure to press 2 at the end of the programming process to select channel 2.

2. Enable Latch Mode on P2

The P2 relay on the radio receiver needs to be set to hold the gate open. Press and hold the P2 button on the radio receiver, if the green LED is solid, follow the instructions in the article linked below to enable latch mode.

3. Pair the New Access Code to P2

Once the new code has been programmed into the keypad and P2 on the receiver has been set up for latch mode, the new code needs to be paired to the receiver on P2. Follow the instructions in the article linked below to pair the code to the receiver.

Understanding and Testing the New Code

Once everything is set up, the new code will work like a switch. The first time the code is entered, the 'switch' is turned on and the gate is sent to the open position and then locked there. The second time the code is entered, the 'switch' is turned off, which allows the system's automatic close timer to begin counting down. Only once the auto close timer has lapsed will the gate begin closing. You can also enter the regular access code after the latch code to immediately close the gate.
  1. Enter the latch code
    1. The gate should open and lock open. Verify it stays open beyond the set auto-close time.
  2. Enter the latch code again
    1. The system's auto-close timer should begin counting down, verify it closes after the set auto-close time.

Example

Programming the Hold Open Access Code

The latch code in this example will be "2468#", the master password is the default, and channel 2 is being used.
After each key press you must move quickly to the next. If you wait too long before the next key press, the keypad will exit programming mode and you will need to start over. We recommend writing down the example below using your own values before beginning the process. This will help you do the process quickly, ensuring the keypad doesn't time out and exit programming.
  1. Enter the master password then press 9
    1. 11111
    2. 9
    3. 2 short beeps
  2. Enter the desired latch code then press 9
    1. 2468#
    2. 9
  3. Enter the desired latch code then press 2
    1. 2468#
    2. 2
    3. 2 short beeps

Enabling Latch Mode on P2

  1. Press and hold P2 on the radio receiver
    1. The green LED should turn on solid
  2. Release P2 and immediately tap P1 while the green LED is still lit.
    1. The green LED should begin flashing rapidly.
    2. If the green LED turns off before P1 is pressed, try again.
  3. Confirm P2 is enabled for latch mode by holding P2 again. The green LED should turn on flashing. If solid, try again.

Pairing the Hold Open Access Code to P2

  1. Enter the latch code and hold down the last digit
    1. 2468, hold down #
    2. Keypad light will flash
  2. While # is being held (last digit), press and hold P2 on the radio receiver
    1. Hold down P2
    2. The receiver will click and the gate will run to the open position if it's not already open.
    3. Let go of both buttons
  3. The latch code is now set up. Type the latch code in and confirm it prevents the gate from automatically closing.
